It’s a fast-moving world, but sometimes it pays to take the 'slow design' approach – without slowing down your project. At Naked Kitchens, we can work to short lead times and move quickly when you need us to, but we also believe in making the most of the planning stage. When you invest time in getting the design right, you’re rewarded with a space you’ll love for life.
At Naked Kitchens, we believe that designing a kitchen should be a careful, thoughtful process, because when you invest time in planning properly, you’re rewarded with a space you’ll love for life.
So we’re quite drawn to the concept of slow design – yes, it’s a bit of a buzzy term, but at the heart of it are some very sound principles: resisting the urge to rush and instead making deliberate choices that reflect your needs, style and values.
What is slow design?
The idea of slow design comes from the broader ‘slow living’ movement – a mindset that values thoughtfulness, sustainability and long-term satisfaction over speed or trends. It encourages embracing quality and things that will last.
In architecture and interior design, slow design is about creating spaces that are made to last and designed around real lives, as well as being crafted with care at every stage. It’s an approach that perfectly matches the Naked philosophy – and it’s also a practical way to ensure quality and avoid costly mistakes!
And while we take time to plan things properly, our customer service and delivery are as smooth, efficient, and well-organised as you’d expect.
Here’s how to put slow design into practice in your kitchen:
1) Dare to dream
There’s nothing wrong with dreaming big – in fact, it’s where the best ideas start. At Naked Kitchens, we don’t believe in limitations!
We can literally make anything: any size, colour, style, or configuration. Don’t be constrained by what you’ve seen in showrooms or magazines. If you’ve always imagined a bright yellow larder cupboard, an island the size of a small boat, or a perfectly proportioned pantry with its own ladder, tell us! Bespoke design means you don’t have to settle for “nearly right.”

2) Think long term
Slow design is about more than the here and now – it’s about how your kitchen will work for you in ten, twenty, or thirty years. Our kitchens are built for life, so we encourage you to think about the future: how your family might grow and change, how your cooking habits may evolve, and how the space could adapt over time.

3) Stand by your values
A true slow design approach reflects what matters most to you. At Naked, we believe in embracing high-quality natural materials and making sustainable choices – and if that’s important to you too, it should be right at the core of your design.
You might even want to take your local landscape into consideration – for a beautiful example of what we mean by that, read about Tom Feary’s stunning retrofit of the Blue House in coastal North Norfolk.
4) Express yourself in colour and finish
Slow design may sound rather zen, but it’s not about minimalism (though zen-like minimalism is fine if that’s what you love!). The key is to make choices that genuinely feel like you, to take the time to create something that makes you happy to walk into the room every day.
We offer completely custom colours, and plenty of scope for pattern, texture and contrast. Minimalist or maximalist, the point is to design a space that reflects your personality and stands the test of time.

5) Trust in craftsmanship
The slow design ethos extends beyond the planning phase and into the making and crafting, focusing on quality at every stage. Our bespoke kitchens are built in our Norfolk workshop by skilled craftspeople who take real pride in their work. Every joint, curve and finish is the result of careful making – and we never cut corners.
It’s actually all the little details you can’t see at first glance, like a perfectly smooth spray-finish or the solid feel of a dovetail joint, that make a kitchen a joy to live with for decades.
6) Avoid regrets with careful planning
This is the practical bit. Rushed design often leads to layout mistakes and awkward workflows. And lots of other potential kitchen annoyances.
So it’s really important to get all the details right - such as drawing a kitchen floor plan accurately.
Taking time at the start gives you the breathing space to think about your space and your stuff, and how you really live. Do you need room for particular items and appliances, or more clever storage? We can help you through all that, and together we’ll refine the design until it works perfectly for you.

Slow design for the whole home
Although kitchens are what we’re best known for, the principles of slow design apply to every corner of the home – and so does our expertise. We bring the same careful thought, craftsmanship, and personal service to utility rooms, pantries, boot rooms, bedrooms and dressing rooms, studies, bars, and more. If it’s part of your home, we can help you make it work beautifully for the long term.
Your kitchen is too important to rush. But 'slow design' doesn’t mean slow customer service or delivery! Throughout your journey, you’ll also experience our friendly, efficient personal service: we’re here to guide you, listen to your ideas, and help you navigate choices without stress or pressure.
